5 May

£10 in the draw! Has to be someone's lucky day! It was a lucky day in 1809 when Mary Kies became the first woman awarded a U.S. patent, for a technique of weaving straw with silk and thread and in 1835, the first railway in continental Europe opened between Brussels and Mechelen. In 1891, the Music Hall in New York City (later known as Carnegie Hall) has its grand opening and first public performance, with Tchaikovsky as the guest conductor.

Famous people born on this day include Karl Marx, German philosopher, born 1818, Michael Palin, English actor and screenwriter, born 1943, Craig David, English singer-songwriter, born 1981 and Henry Cavill, English actor (Superman), born 1983. The day has to go to Monty Python actor and traveller Mr Michael Palin:

One of the most important days of my life was when I learned to ride a bicycle.

The human race should just slow down and think about what it is doing.

I am restless. I don't mind leaving this comfortable, static life. I could live a year on my own in a remote village.

Have a wonderful day!
