2 April

£10 in the draw! Is it your Lucky Day? Well, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León had a lucky day in 1513 as he first sighted land in what is now Florida and in 1800, Ludwig van Beethoven lead the premiere of his First Symphony in Vienna. Finally, in 1902, Electric Theatre opened in Los Angeles, the first full-time movie theatre in the United States.

Famous people born on this day include Émile Zola, French novelist, playwright, journalist, born 1840, Marvin Gaye, American singer-songwriter, born 1939, Sue Townsend, English author and playwright (The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾) born 1946, and Linford Christie, Jamaican-English sprinter, born 1960.

The day has to go to Marvin though – take it away Marv!
