8 March

The 8th day of March, what have you in store for us? Well, in 1775, an anonymous writer, thought by some to be Thomas Paine, published "African Slavery in America", the first article in the American colonies to call for the emancipation of slaves and the abolition of slavery. In 1817, the New York Stock Exchange was founded and in 1936, Daytona Beach and Road Course held its first oval stock car race. On this day in 1971, the ‘Fight of the Century’ between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali began, with Frazier winning in 15 rounds via an unanimous decision. In 1978, the first radio episode of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams, was transmitted on BBC Radio 4 and in 1979, Philips demonstrated the compact disc publicly for the first time.

Famous people born on this day include Micky Dolenz, American singer-songwriter, drummer, and actor with The Monkees, born 1945; Cheryl Baker, English singer with the Eurovision pop sensation band Bucks Fizz, born 1954; and would you believe Dawson from Dawson’s Creek (James Van Der Beek) was born on this day in 1977? Now I feel old!

It’s a tough one, but I’m going to dedicate the day to The Monkees and their brilliant song ‘I'm a believer’! Everyone sing along now!

I thought love was only true in fairytales
Meant for someone else but not for me
Love was out to get me
That's the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I'm in love, I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her if I tried

Keep on believing my friend and I wish you a very lucky day!
(Have you checked yet whether today is your Lucky Day? As yet not claimed!)
