3 February

A random day of tunnels and shuttles! On 3rd February in 1918, the Twin Peaks Tunnel in San Francisco began service as the longest streetcar tunnel in the world, and in 1966 the first controlled rocket-assisted landing on the Moon took place (by the unmanned Soviet Luna 9 spacecraft). This was followed in 1995 by astronaut Eileen Collins becoming the first woman to pilot the Space Shuttle on this day. Born in 1809 on this day German pianist, composer and conductor, Felix Mendelssohn, and in 1894 American painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell was also born on this day.

So many great achievements! But surely the biggest achievement was doing a thing called the Crocodile Rock? While the other kids were Rocking Round the Clock, we were hopping and bopping to the Crocodile Rock… ! (Number one on the US Billboard, in 1973, Elton John with his Crocodile Rock!)
Oh Lawdy mama those Friday nights
when Suzie wore her dresses tight
and the Crocodile Rocking was out of sight!
