24 February

So, 24 February? What lucky events do you have in store for us? Well, in 1607, L'Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi received its première performance, widely considered to be one of the first works recognized as an opera, which is uncanny, because on the same day in 1711, the London première of Rinaldo by George Frideric Handel was held, the first Italian opera written for the London stage. Moving swiftly away from opera and onto a sports field, on this day in 1980, the United States Olympic Hockey team completed its 'Miracle on Ice' by defeating Finland 4–2 to win the gold medal.

Staying with sport, born on this day are two famous sportsmen: first, we have Alain Prost, French race car driver, born on 24 February in 1955. Next, we have Floyd Mayweather, Jr., American boxer, born on this day in 1977.

But today isn’t dedicated to opera or sport, instead it goes to a man born on this day who did much to change the technology and importance of design over the last thirty years: Steve Jobs, American businessman, co-founder of Apple Inc. and Pixar, born on this day in 1955:

Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

Have an apple, watch a cool animated film, enjoy the day my friend!
