23 February

Oh my 23 February! What a day you are, so full of self-doubt and contradiction! First we have Charles Martin Hall and his sister, Julia Brainerd Hall, producing the first samples of man-made aluminium in 1886, and next we have, in 1927, German theoretical physicist Werner Heisenberg writing a letter to fellow physicist Wolfgang Pauli, in which he describes his uncertainty principle for the first time. Do not worry though. Any uncertainty about anything was soon banished as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was founded on this day in 1947. A good thing too, as in 1987 Supernova 1987a was seen in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and we wouldn’t want to doubt any of this!

Thank goodness for the women born on this day who have no uncertainty that is for sure. In 1959, Linda Nolan from the Irish group, The Nolans, was born, and in 1983, English actress Emily Blunt was born, who starred alongside Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow. Another actress born on this day who starred with Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds is Dakota Fanning, born 1994. There must be something about this day and Tom Cruise’s leading ladies, although I don’t recall one of The Nolan sisters being in one of his films? It is only a matter of time of course.

Wishing you a star filled day of definite luck!
