20 February

So many lucky events for 20 February so let’s get a move on! First, in 1792, the Postal Service Act was signed by President George Washington, establishing the United States Post Office Department. In 1816, Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville premièred at the Teatro Argentina in Rome and in 1872, the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened in New York City. The following year in 1873, the University of California opened its first medical school in San Francisco and, in 1877, Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake premièred at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. In 1935, Caroline Mikkelsen became the first woman to set foot in Antarctica and in 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth, making three orbits in four hours, 55 minutes while aboard Friendship 7.

However, the number of famous people born on this day is something else. First, we have the peerless Sidney Poitier, American actor, director and diplomat. born on this day in 1927: “I decided in my life that I would do nothing that did not reflect positively on my father's life.”

Other famous people born on this day include Jimmy Greaves, English footballer and sportscaster, born 1940; Mike Leigh, English director and screenwriter, born 1943; Ivana Trump, Czech-American skier and model, born 1949; Ian Brown, English singer-songwriter for The Stone Roses, born 1963; Cindy Crawford, American model and businesswoman, born 1966; and, Rihanna, Barbadian-American singer-songwriter and actress, born 1988: "People think, because we're young, we aren't complex, but that's not true. We deal with life and love and broken hearts in the same way a woman a few years older might."

But the day goes to Kurt Cobain, American singer-songwriter and guitarist for Nirvanna, born on this day in 1967:

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

I'm so happy because today I found my friends - they're in my head.

Have a happy lucky day my friend, and remember to tell all your friends about us (and not the ones in your head like Kurt!) as when more people have joined our free and amazing lottery, we can increase the amount in the prize draw.
