17 February

How wonderful is 17 February! Who knew! On this day in 1863, a group of citizens in Geneva founded the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, which later became known as the International Committee of the Red Cross. In 1904, Madame Butterfly received its première at La Scala in Milan and in 1933, the magazine, Newsweek, was first published. A lovely collection of lucky events on this 17th of February day!

Some great birthdays can be found on this day too. In 1934, Barry Humphries, the Australian comedian, actor, and author, as well as alter ego of Dame Edna Everage was born: "There is no more terrible fate for a comedian than to be taken seriously." Also born on this day, in 1940, was the American singer-songwriter Gene Pitney and in 1963 the American basketball player, Michael Jordan.

More recently, American model and celebrity Paris Hilton was born on this day in 1981, who shocked the world when she said “I don't really think, I just walk.” However, the day is dedicated to a twenty-five year old English singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer, Ed Sheeran, who has thankfully never been lost for thoughts: “Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, then it's not the end.”
