31 January

And so we come to the last day of January, a month that was named after Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions. And so many beginnings and transitions we have seen the last 31 days, and yet there is still more. On this day in 1930, 3M begins marketing Scotch Tape and in 1949 ‘These Are My Children’ became the first television daytime soap opera broadcast by the NBC station in Chicago. In 2010, Avatar became the first film to gross over $2 billion worldwide and in 1970 The Jackson 5 were top of the US Billboard with 'I Want You Back'. So many random, lucky firsts on this the last day of the first month.

But we end in 1981, with Blondie, who were number on one the US Billboard with 'The Tide Is High'. Why? Well, is there anyone more brilliant than Debbie Harry? "I have a lot of regrets, but I'm not going to think of them as regrets."

The tide is high but I'm holding on,
I'm gonna be your number one,
I'm not the kind of girl who gives up just like that.
Oh, no!
