22 January

22 January, such a lucky day of great orators! On this day in 1788, Lord Byron was born, whose poem Don Juan is considered one of the most important long poems published in England. Possibly topping this is the fact that in 1927 Teddy Wakelam gave the very first live radio commentary of a football match anywhere in the world (between Arsenal F.C. and Sheffield United at Highbury). Surely nothing can be greater than this? Well, on 22 January 1971, Stan Collymore, English footballer and sportscaster was born. Actually, maybe we should rethink this day and celebrate instead Simon & Garfunkel at the top of the US Billboard in 1966 with “The Sound of Silence”.

Ah, peace and quiet at last!
